O’Callaghan Eliott Hotel – Verandha Bar

With the option of free seating, my eyes were instantly drawn to the corner table at the back with sofa like chairs and a table sufficient for 5; we were after all a large group…

From the table, with a view of the entire bar, I was easily able to immerse myself in my surroundings, watching gaggles of older ladies, dressed in the afternoon finest, discuss this week’s hot topics, whilst their husbands, wearing their afternoon best, read the day’s newspaper with a fine beer.

Within seconds of having sat down, I was approached by the waiter and offered the bar menu. A selection of high tea nibbles for 4 and one gourmet sandwich along with a few coffees and a pot of green tea.

Shortly after, our food arrived. The presentation was flawless, the high tea selection consisted of a decadent array of baked goods including scones with cream. The gourmet sandwich, was freshly prepared, with fresh continental meats and salad accompanied by a mountain of crisps.

As the afternoon progressed and we lost ourselves in conversation and I couldn’t help but notice the comfort and homely nature of the place, and how it quickly it had become became busier. From the older generations looking for a mid afternoon catch up and business minded individuals discussing their future endeavours to ever day individuals looking for a resting place after a long day of work, hoping to unwind with a good glass of wine.

If you’re looking for an afternoon of quiet sophistication the O’Callaghan Eliott Hotel’s Verandha Bar is certainly one to try.
